Annual Conference 2009 on Domestic Violence and Abuse, February 26-27, 1000 East 80th Street Bloomington, MN 55420, hosted by Cornerstone. The conference features fifteen workshops on topics as varied as juvenile prostitution, intimate partner stalking,
alternative batterer accountability and a systemic treatment model for therapists working with families experiencing domestic abuse.

Combating Child Poverty through Place-Based Initiatives, University of Chicago Gleacher Center, Chicago, IL A policy forum to discuss community-based activities aimed at stemming the cycle of concentrated, intergenerational poverty. Chapin Hall research fellow Robert Chaskin will discuss the research agenda needed to strengthen new and continuing efforts. Panelists will also discuss models of initiatives that integrate services for high-need young people and families, and will explore how they can complement comprehensive neighborhood development work. The American Evaluation Association will be hosting evaluators from around the world at AEA’s annual conference, to be held November 5-8 in Denver, Colorado.  Nora Murphy and Greg Welch will be in attendance.  Let us know if you will be there!

October 2008

October 23: The real costs of teen motherhood, presented by the Chapin Hall Center for Children and the Urban Institute.  Panelists will discuss the effects teen childbearing has on the life trajectories of the mother and child, the costs to government agencies aiding teens’ children, and the increased risks these children face, including maltreatment, being placed into foster care, and incarceration. Private and public programs that reduce teen pregnancy, help teen mothers avoid bearing a second child, and change teen behavior will be explored.

20th Annual Teachers as Leaders and Learners workshop hosted by the Chicago Foundation for Education.  Each year, CFE hosts a teacher symposium with over 60 grant-winning teachers presenting workshop sessions, showcasing the projects they’ve completed in their classroom and the impact they achieved on student learning.  Attendees learn tips and methods to help incorporate these innovative teaching strategies and curricular projects into hundreds of classrooms across Chicago.  Click here for more information.

Michael Quinn Patton, the ‘father’ of evaluation, will be addressing the Chicagoland Evaluation Association on Thursday, July 31st from 6-9PM at the Shedd Aquarium.  There is still time to join CEA and participate in this exciting event!

Nora Murphy, Founder and Owner of Murphy Educational Consulting LLC earns a Network Award  from Perspectives Charter School.  She was nominated by her peers for outstanding quality of work, dedication, and innovation.

Greg Welch has accepted a position as a research assistant professor at the University of Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools and will begin this August
